Naturopathic Medical Sciences

NMS121 Acupuncture I Oriental Medicine (AOM) 
AOM 121 introduces the student to the principals, theories of diagnosis, and therapeutics of Oriental medicine. The clean needle technique is also reviewed. (5 credits)

AOM 221 provides training in the use of acupuncture in orthopedic conditions. (5 credits)

AOM 321 includes training in traditional Chinese medical diagnosis, differentiation of syndromes, and principles of treatment with herbs and acupuncture. (5 credits)

AOM 421 teaches meridians and points, includes labs and lectures, and introduces students to practical experience. (5 credits)

AOM 521 concentrates on clinical case studies and clinical practicum. (4 credits)

NMS122 Botanical Medicine 
Botanical Medicine 122 outlines the uses of botanical and related substances for the healing process throughout man's history. (5 credits)

Botanical Medicine 222 explores pharmacognosy, procedures in harvesting and processing, interpretation of Latin nomenclature, and first aid therapeutic effects of botanical medicines. The biochemical constituent groups of botanicals are studied, as to their use in naturopathic medicine. (8 credits)

Botanical Medicine 322 and 422 continue the studies of botanicals as detoxifying, immune stimulating, buffering and rejuvenating agents. The effects of botanicals on external pollutants is discussed. (10 credits)

NMS123 Business Practice 
Business Practice presents the aspects of managing a naturopathic practice. Included are strategic planning, marketing, public relations, accounting, budgeting, conflict resolution, supervising employees, and staff relations. (2 credits)

NMS124 Homeopathy 
Homeopathy 124
uses the repertory, prioritization of symptoms and case taking to introduce the student to the history and practice of Homeopathic medicine. (4 credits)

Homeopathy 224 studies acute prescribing, focusing on homeopathic remedies used in emergency situations. (6 credits)

Homeopathy 324 includes classical homeopathy, repertory, materia medica, and polycrests. (8 credits)

Homeopathy 424 studies the relationship between the homeopathic remedies, botanical remedies, and combing the two in naturopathic therapeutic protocols. (6 credits)

NMS 125 Hydrotherapy 
Hydrotherapy 125 and 225
teaches the historical and modern therapeutic practices that use water as a healing tool. This includes colonic therapy, constitutional hydrotherapy, steam, alternating water temperature techniques and fasting. (2 credits)

LR102 Library/Research 
Time is allotted for students to use the library facilities and tools for projects, writings, and research work, skills necessary to develop the resources available to the naturopathic practitioner. (10 credits)

NMS126 Medical Ethics / Jurisprudence 
This course reviews the tenets that the naturopathic physician lives by. The course includes the role of the physician as teacher, role model and counselor. Also covered are the legal aspects of a medical practice, such as patient confidentiality, "bed-side manner," informed consent, the Good Samaritan law, malpractice, political and legislative implications, and health practitioner ethics from around the wor1d. (1 credit)

NMS127 Minor Surgery 
Minor Surgery covers the conditions that may be treated in-office, such as the principles, techniques, and patient management of office surgical procedures. The adjunctive naturopathic medical prescriptions used in office or by the patient before and after a referral for major surgery, or emergency obstetrics delivery are also covered. (6 credits)

NMS128 Naturopathic Medicine / Therapeutics 
Naturopathic Medicine 128
is an introduction to the history and philosophy of naturopathic medicine, and explores the therapeutic techniques of the "nature cure" and its evolvement into the modern naturopathic technique, and how these systems are integrated into the physician's way of treating the patient. (1 credit)

Naturopathic Therapeutics 228 studies the various pioneers of natural healing, their respective theories and philosophies, and text material still in use today (1 credit)

NMS129 Naturopathic Standards of Care 
NSC 129 I and II
teaches the physiology, pathology and protocols for naturopathic care in EENT, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, and Oncology. (9 credits)

NSC 229 I and II continue with care in Gynecology, Obstetrics/Home birth, Pediatrics, and Urology. (9 credits)

NSC 329 I and II complete the course with care in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary medicine, Geriatrics and 
Dermatology. (8 credits)

NMS130 Orthopedic / Sports Medicine and Lab 
OSM 130 reviews the assessment of the neuromusculoskeletal system and diagnosis of orthopedic conditions, with an emphasis on common sports injuries and trauma. (3 credits)

OSM 230 Lab lets students learn and perform practical techniques in splinting, taping and casting. (2 credits)

NMS131 Pharmacology.
Pharmacology 131
studies the concepts and physiological mechanisms, as well as side effects of pharmaceuticals most commonly prescribed in allopathic medicine. The naturopathic alternatives and substances are also reviewed. (4 credits)

NMS132 Physical Medicine / Naturopathic Manipulation 
PM / NM 132
presents the philosophy and theory of naturopathic manipulative therapy. Training includes massage, therapeutic touch, acupressure, shiatsu, trigger point therapy, and strain / counterstrain. (6 credits)

PM /I NM 232 studies naturopathic osseous manipulation of the spine and extremities, and the use of nutrition, physiotherapy, therapeutic exercise, and acupuncture as adjunctive therapies. (6 credits)

PM / NM 332 continues the practical application of naturopathic manipulative therapy with emphasis on severe conditions. (6 credits)

PM / NM 432 completes the course with emphasis on advanced disability assessment, evaluation with CT, MRI,. and report writing. (2 credits)

NCS133 Preceptorship 
Student doctors complete an externship of their choice before graduation. Time is allocated for out of state preceptorships. (7 credits)

NMS134 Psychology 
Psychology 134
focuses on the recognition of the self. The physician must be aware of the role one plays as a student, teacher, partner, and parent. The skills needed to mediate and communicate in life situations are developed. (1 credit)

Psychology 234 looks at issues surrounding emergencies and life in transition, and studies the doctor-patient relationship, covering communication and counseling techniques. (4 credits)

Psychology 334 teaches therapeutic techniques and alternatives in the practice pf psychology, including psychoneuroimmunology, nutrition, brain biochemistry, NLP, and recognition of spiritual crises. Discussion of trends and breakthroughs in psychological care is included. (4 credits)

NMS135 Preventative / Therapeutic Exercise 
P/TE 135
teaches the student how to perform a fitness assessment, prescribe and monitor exercise programs for various disease and injury conditions, and to combine exercise with a nutritional and adjunctive therapy program. (4 credits)

P/TE 235 deals with the unique rehabilitative needs of various injuries, and emphasizes the needs of the athlete. (4 credits)

NMS136 Clinical Hypnosis 
This course covers the history and uses of hypnosis in medicine, and the student receives training in pain management, stress management, weight reduction, and smoking cessation through hypnosis. (5 credits)

NMS137 Issues and Government 
This course deals with the process of legislation and its effect on health-related issues. The student learns to be aware of actions that might effect the practice of naturopathic medicine through lobbying and special interest. (1 credit)

RS103 to 803 Required Seminars 
All students must attend two (2) seminars per year of attendance. Subject matter will be pertinent to the study and practice of naturopathic medicine.
